Week 3: Living Life

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

This week in my heath class my teacher was absent, and being a typical sub, he put on a movie for us to watch for the 50 minute class period. And, it being health class, I was expecting an unbearable video of how to be physically heathly when we are stressed. But, instead my sub put in a DVD called “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”, and although I had no idea what I was in for, I later learned from my mom that this was extremely popular when I was little, and there was even a book based off this one lecture. It was a recording of Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, giving a lecture about how to, obviously from the title, achieve your childhood dreams. Here are some things you need to know about this awesome guy before I go on

  • Randy was 47
  • He was a very accomplished computer science professor, he was even an Imagineer at Disney!
  • Randy had a wife and 3 young kids that you could just tell he loved with all his heart, he even stopped in the middle of the speach to give his wife a birthday cake because they had been unable to celebrate
  • Randy had  pancreatic cancer and had 3-6 “good” months left before his doctors said he would pass away

That last one is a shocker right?!? In the very beginning of the speach Randy even makes a point to do clap pushups to show that otherwise he is in pretty good health. Now I won’t go on and on about the details of this lecture, mostly because you HAVE to watch it for yourself first. But one thing really suprised me about this entire lecture given his certain situation. Randy was not talking about how he was about to die, and how that stunk so much considering he was literally 47 and would never get to see his kids graduate high school and college, get married, and have kids, or grow old with his wife ; he wanted to better the world one last time before he left it.

My teacher meant for this to show what happens when your “health triangle” is unbalanced but you can still fix it, but to me it showed the strength our Lord gives us to fight the battles we are handed. God strengthened Randy and then Randy was able to affect people’s lives all over the world. Even though Randy passed away 8 years ago, long before I even knew he exsisted, his words touched me and showed me that if God can give you the strength to do THAT, he can give you the strength to do anything! The Lord works in mysterious ways as we are always told, and this is example 1 billion as to how.

Thanks so much for reading! I am so greatful for all the support everyone has given me on this blog! I included a quote from the lecture below, I love it so much and I hope you do too! I pray that God gives you the strength to fight your battles this week, love you guys and have a rocking week!!
