“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith,
and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
Ephesians 3:8

Hi everyone! Happy December and Merry Christmas :)! I hope that this time of year has been filling your heart with love and joy, and that you have been smiling lots! With all of the wonderful holiday spirit, I wanted to share a story with you that really sums up this season for me.

Earlier this month, a couple of girls in my youth group, (Jillian and Kaitlin love you lots!) and I were talking to the Advent service about homelessness. Our church makes bags that have things like socks, soap, shampoo, snacks, etc. in them, and you can give them to a homeless person. I am personally a huge fan of them, because they give me a vehicle to talk to people who I normally wouldn’t necessarily know how to talk to.

After the service, one of the men in the service came up to us and began to talk to us about something that could be added to the bags. He told  us that ginger root, yes, ginger actually has a root, could really be helping the homeless. Apparently if you eat a little bit of ginger your entire body is warmed, and stays warm for hours. Side note: I really want to get these added to the bags! (Don’t worry, when I got home I actually looked this and it really does naturally warm you up!)

I know it sounds funny, but this really stuck with me! How could eating less than a bite of a vegetable warm you up so much that it could be helpful in the Chicago winters? How could such a small thing affect you so much? And then when I was falling asleep a couple of nights ago I made the connection, ginger is like God!

I promise, ginger and Jesus have a lot more in common than you may think:)! Think about it, with even a little bit of Jesus, your heart can be warmed and your life can be changed. You can use ginger to spice up a meal, or you can use it to keep you warm in bone jarring cold. You can use Jesus for small things, like getting through a tough day, or you can give your life to him, and spend your life trying to live like him.

And, there is nothing you can do to make the ginger warm you up. All you can do is eat it. God’s love works the same, because there is nothing we can do to deserve his love. His love is a gift, the best gift ever, that is given to us. We are saved by Jesus, “not of our own doing”, but of God’s.

Ginger to me seems like the perfect representation of God’s love. You don’t know how awesome it is until you experience a little of it, then you never want to give it up. And, there is nothing we can do to truly understand how it works, just as we will never truly understand how much God loves us.

So this month, I challenge you to put a little more ginger, both literal and figurative haha, into your life. Let God’s love warm you up and change your heart.

Thank you for reading! Have a blessed holiday season and an even better month!
